Frequently Asked Questions About Keukenhof Flower Garden
Is Keukenhof worth visiting?
Keukenhof is a place that will sprinkle nature's magic into your day. Opened in 1950, the park now features 7 million beautiful flowers in unique patterns across 79 acres of lush gardens. Add a lake, a few babbling streams, sculptures and a windmill you can go inside, and you will understand why Keukenhof has the title of the world's largest flower garden and is worth visiting on a trip to the Netherlands.

Does Keukenhof live up to the hype?
Keukenhof absolutely lives up to the hype that surrounds it. I was even more impressed by the tulip garden than I expected.
It's massive, and that's no exaggeration. Every possible space is filled with the most beautiful array of colourful spring flowers. It's pretty mind-blowing that there are so many flowers in one place. I was in flower heaven as I wandered along the pathways, rewarded with different colours or variations of tulips and daffodils at every turn.
I was also amazed at the lush green colour of the grass and trees. That sounds odd because green grass is surely the same everywhere, but something about it here looked like a Disney animator had painted it.
Every pathway brought a new surprise, and even though it rained for much of my visit, the weather couldn't dampen my spirits when so many beautiful flowers surrounded me.

Where is Keukenhof?
First, let's get some important facts straight: despite much literature reporting that Keukenhof is in Amsterdam, it is not. The tulip gardens and surrounding flower fields are located in Lisse, around 40 kilometres from Amsterdam. Bear that in mind when planning a visit to Keukenhof.
I had previously imagined the gardens were on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Having visited them, I now know they are considerably further away, so when you hear about the tulips in Amsterdam, they are actually in the town of Lisse, and believe me, when I say it's a bit tricky to reach. Follow my travel tips below for the easiest ways to get to Keukenhof.
For me, a pre-organised trip to Keukenhof, which included a coach transfer from Schiphol Airport, the meeting point if you aren't staying in central Amsterdam (I was staying in Zaandam) and pre-booked entry tickets, gave me peace of mind that getting to Keukenhof and entering the gardens would be effortless and without issues, and it was once I had found the coach stop at Schiphol.
Address: Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse, Netherlands.

When will Holland's tulip garden open in 2026?
In 2026, Keukenhof will be open from 19 March to 10 May, 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM.
The short window for visiting is due to the flowering season lasting only a few weeks. From the moment they flower to their peak bloom (mid-April) to the petals falling off is a brief 6-8 weeks, depending on the weather.
As soon as I decided to visit the tulip garden, I set an alert on my phone to buy tickets for the April date I specifically wanted when they went on sale in mid-October. You will want to do the same, as this is a very popular annual event in Holland, and visitors come from far afield to see the beautiful displays.

When is the best time to see the tulips in full bloom?
For the optimum experience of seeing tulips and other flowers in Keukenhof, like hyacinths, daffodils and crocuses at their best, you should aim to visit in mid-April.
If you go too early, the flowers may not have bloomed fully, and if you go toward the end of the Tulip Festival, the flowers may have already shed their petals.

I visited in early April, and as you can see from my photographs of Keukenhof, the spring flowers were in full bloom and exceptionally beautiful. Although I experienced showers during my visit, the raindrops resting on the flower petals made them look even more magical.
The best dates for peak bloom in 2026 are 9th April to 3rd May - subject to weather. If it's been too wet, windy, or the previous summer too dry, the bulbs may be affected.

Getting to Keukenhof Garden
Now I've shared what the garden is like; here's the tricky part: how to get to Keukenhof.
Arriving by car
The easiest way to get to the Keukenhof tulip garden is by car, as parking is plentiful, and you don't have to wait for coaches or trains. Pre-book parking at Keukenhof online; otherwise, it is €14 at the gate. If you are using a taxi service, the prices are high due to demand. Expect to pay approximately £30 one-way from central Amsterdam.
From Amsterdam and the surrounding area: Follow the A4 and take the N207, then navigate to the P1 parking zone.
From Rotterdam and the surrounding area: Follow the A4, then take the N434 to the A44. Exit to the N208 or N206 and navigate to the P2 parking zone.
By air
If you are flying into Amsterdam and need a car, you can rent a car online and pick it up at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Angie's Top Tip: If you plan to travel directly from Schiphol Airport to the gardens by public transport and have luggage with you, don't worry, as Keukenhof has luggage storage lockers.
By train
From Amsterdam Centraal, you can take the train to Leiden via Haarlem. Once you get off the train at Leiden, bus number 854 will take you to Keukenhof.
Another option is to take the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Sassenheim, then take bus 50 or 361 to the flower garden.
By Bus
From Amsterdam RAI station (10 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal), take bus 852. The journey will take around 35 minutes.
Hop aboard the number 858 from Schiphol Airport (trains run to the airport from central Amsterdam). The bus ticket costs approx £10, but if you have an Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket, it includes the 858 bus.
On an organised tour from Amsterdam
Booking your transport and entry tickets to Keukenhof is a good idea, and was the option I chose.
Tickets sell out quickly, so to secure dates with optimal exposure to the tulips, book your Keukenhof tickets in advance. I booked a return coach ticket from Amsterdam that included entry tickets to Keukenhof.
On an organised tour from Rotterdam
From Rotterdam: luxury bus tour with a ticket to Keukenhof.
Rotterdam: Private sightseeing tour of Keukenhof and tulip fields.
Rotterdam: Private tour of Tulips, Keukenhof, Windmill and Cheese.

How long will I need to spend in the flower garden?
I allowed myself 3 hours to see all the areas of Keukenhof, including a stop for my packed lunch.
It will be busy whenever you visit, so allow time to work through the crowds. If you want to climb to the windmill's viewpoint, you will need to queue, so factor that into your timeframe. I didn't do this because the queue was long, even first thing in the morning, and it was raining, so I didn't fancy standing in a queue just to get a higher perspective view of the gardens.
Keukenhof's website advises arriving early (8:00 AM) to beat the crowds, which is sound advice if you are going there to take photographs, as it's tricky to capture distant images without people in them when so many are wandering about.
We arrived at 10:00 AM, and the gardens were filling up. The number of coaches unloading visitors, who were then queuing at the turnstiles, was overwhelming. The good news is that the bottleneck soon clears as people move in different directions through the gardens.
That said, by the time we left at 2:00 PM, the gardens were unbearably busy.
Understand that whatever time you go to the Keukenhof, it's going to be packed with visitors eager to see the vibrant displays of flowers.

Dining in Keukenhof
There are numerous places to buy refreshments in the flower gardens, from restaurants to kiosks, but the queues are long, and prices are high.
Angie's Top Tip: Bring a packed lunch and find a quiet spot (there are a few) to enjoy lunch. We did this, and saved time and money.

Keukenhof for families
Miffy, the Dutch bunny character, is everywhere in Keukenhof. From statues to live characters, and even flower arrangements in the form of Miffy. I had never heard of the bunny before visiting, but it soon became apparent from the excitement on the kids' faces that Miffy is big business for children in Holland. And of course I had to try on a pair of Miffy clogs!
A playground, maze and small animal meadow are also at Keukenhof to keep the kids entertained while the parents enjoy the flower-filled surroundings.

Can I see tulips in the Netherlands without visiting Keukenhof?
Many tulip fields are scattered around Lisse, and you will see some of them as you make your way to Keukenhof; they are quite a sight to behold and are a first glimpse of what to expect in the flower garden. These are working flower farms that cultivate bulbs and flowers for worldwide shipment, so you can't walk through them.

However, you can join a flower fields cultural bicycle tour that will take you around the perimeter of the tulip fields so you can see them in all their glory. You will also visit Keukenhof Castle and the Amsterdam Tulip Experience during your cycling tour. Entrance to Keukenhof Flower Garden is not included in this activity.
Why not take the bike tour first, then visit the Keukenhof tulip gardens? It will make for a special day out in Lisse.
You may also consider taking the Whisper Boat, which cruises the waterways around Keukenhof. You must have a Keukenhof entry ticket to book this activity.
Buy your Keukenhof entry ticket online to secure your preferred dates.

Spring Flower Parade (Bollenstreek) 2026
Try to time a visit to Keukenhof to coincide with the annual Spring Flower Parade (Bollenstreek), which is held for one day only; in 2026, it is on the 18th April.
When I visited the Netherlands, I missed this special event by one day, which was a shame, as it is, by all accounts, a flower-filled extravaganza.
A long parade of flower floats follows a 42-kilometre route from Noordwijk to Haarlem, passing along Keukenhof Boulevard. It's the highlight of the tulip season, so get to the Keukenhof area early to see this phenomenal display of flowers.
Visit the official Bollenstreek website for up-to-date information.
Why not book a transfer from Amsterdam to include a grandstand seat at the Flower Parade, plus a visit to the Keukenhof Gardens?
Angie's Top Tip: You don't need tickets to Keukenhof to see this flower parade, as it runs along public roads, not inside the gardens. It might just be a nice idea to make a day of it and visit Keukenhof at the same time.
Beyond Keukenhof
You've seen the sensational tulip gardens, so what next?
How about combining Keukenhof with a visit to the historic windmill village of Zaanse Schans?

Or visit the town of Zaandam to see the unique colourful buildings. If you like Lego, you will love this quirky area - you can even stay the night at the Inntel Hotel, as I did, and you will still be in reach of Keukenhof Garden.

Further afield, head to Rotterdam. It is packed with fabulous things to see and do, and is the perfect destination to visit from Amsterdam. You can check out my Rotterdam posts below:

Spot on about mid-April — that's the sweet spot for the fields. We went slightly early one year and the gardens still delivered thanks to the pavilions, but the fields were mostly green. For anyone planning around bloom timing, it's worth knowing Keukenhof is a world-class option.
