Tenerife in March with Jet2 from London Gatwick

Jet2holidays now fly to Tenerife from London Gatwick, and I was on the inaugural flight, heading for a 5-night stay at the adults-only Melia Jardines del Teide in Costa Adeje. Up until now, I have had to head to Stansted for my Jet2holidays, so Gatwick is a welcome addition, especially as I live down the road from it. No more long drives for me!

The new Jet2 hub in the South Terminal gives travellers a welcome option to book flights and holidays from London Gatwick with a carrier other than the regular Gatwick cohort. Jet2 consistently wins awards, and in 2026 scooped the Globe Travel Award for Best Short Haul Operator.

So come along with me as I join the 1st Flight Club from London Gatwick on my Jet2holiday to Tenerife, and decide for yourself whether the standards, pricing, and customer care offered by Jet2 are exactly what you've been waiting for.

Is it worth visiting Tenerife in March?

Yes, Tenerife is worth visiting in March, as it boasts a microclimate that stays warm and moderately dry almost year-round.

It’s the ultimate spring sun destination to wipe away the cobwebs after a cold and wet UK winter, and with holidays to Tenerife with Jet2 now departing from Gatwick, it's a win-win situation. Temperatures in Tenerife in March can reach 21 degrees, as they did on my holiday.

Don't expect the water temperatures to match; it's still cold (19 degrees), as I found out when I ventured into the sea at Playa del Duque. But it's refreshing for a quick dip, and you can't possibly come to Tenerife without having a splash about in the sea.

The weather in the south of the island is warmer and less windy than in the north, which is important to bear in mind when travelling to Tenerife in March. Adeje enjoys the most favourable climate in Tenerife, as I found out while sunbathing around the pool at Melia Jardines del Teide.

What is Costa Adeje like and who does it suit?

Adeje caters perfectly to travellers seeking a laid-back escape. Rather than glitzy nightclubs or rows of noisy bars, the resort offers a sophisticated blend of upmarket restaurants and charming, family-run cafes. Here, a slow-paced afternoon of people-watching takes centre stage on the holiday agenda.

On my visit, the majority of visitors were mature couples, though, because it was coming up to the Easter holidays, there were also families on the beach. I can only surmise that the spring in Adeje attracts an older set seeking a more temperate climate than the summer heat.

If shopping is your pleasure, the Centro Comercial Plaza del Duque offers a variety of upmarket international brands alongside Spanish designers.

Adeje has a long promenade perfect for morning walks. It will take around an hour to walk from La Caleta to Puerto Colon. The coastal views are stunning, with plenty of seating along the way to rest your legs.

What are the beaches like in Adeje?

Beaches in Costa Adeje are a mix of black volcanic and white sands. The two most popular Adeje beaches are Playa del Duque and Playa de Fanabe, which offer sweeping golden sands and shallow entry points. Beach sunbeds and umbrellas are available for day-long rental, with prices varying by beach. Expect to pay on average €15.

What is there to do in Tenerife?

Tenerife is a large island, and it is worth spending a day exploring it. On my 5-night trip, I hired a car for one day and did a self-drive island tour, starting in Adeje, where I was staying and drove all the way up to the north to Puerto de la Cruz. I made sure hubby did all the driving because all I wanted to do was sit back and admire the beautiful scenery!

If a road trip isn't for you, then a whole selection of water-based activities is available. From whale-watching to sunset cruises and jet-skiing, or simply spending time on the beach, there's something to suit everybody.

For adrenaline junkies, parasailing is a big thing in Adeje, so you might want to have a go.

In Tenerife, a high-angle paraglider with a vibrant red canopy floats in a clear blue sky over a rocky beach. In the background, a modern multi-story white hotel sits nestled into a hillside with palm trees. The beach below features grey volcanic sand and a row of thatched umbrellas over sun loungers where people are relaxing.

And for those wanting to hike, Mount Teide offers over 60 trails, including the Panoramic Pico Viejo viewpoint, a short hike from the La Rambleta cable car station.

In addition to trails, the most popular attraction in Tenerife is the cable car, which takes you to a height of 3,555 metres and allows you unprecedented views across the island and beyond. Booking is essential.

What is Melia Jardines Del Teide like?

The 4-star plus adults-only Melia Jardines Del Teide is a luxurious 300-room resort, nestled on a hillside in Adeje. It's a 15-minute walk to the popular beach, Playa del Duque, and is designed to appeal to couples and solo travellers seeking an aesthetically pleasing, contemporary resort with an abundance of landscaped terraces.

With two on-site restaurants, plus a bar and a buffet restaurant, there is no shortage of places to dine, and having eaten at both, I have to say the food quality and presentation are spot-on. Add to that a huge swimming pool and a gym plus exercise classes, allowing you to keep the holiday eating under control if you should so wish!

What was the Jet2 check-in like at London Gatwick?

Thursday, 26th March 2026, marked the first-ever Jet2 flight from London Gatwick, and I was a passenger heading to the sunshine in Tenerife.

Jet2 operates out of Gatwick’s South Terminal, where I found the self-check-in machines incredibly intuitive.

Friendly staff monitored the area closely and guided me as I weighed my suitcase and scanned my boarding pass. After the machine dispensed my luggage sticker, a Jet2 team member quickly affixed it to my bag.

Jet2 staff welcomed me with a smile.

At the check-in desk, I presented my passport and placed my suitcase on the conveyor belt. I watched as the agent scanned the tag, and I said bon voyage to my luggage. To keep things simple, Jet2 provides a generous 22kg hold allowance alongside a 10kg hand luggage limit. To make things even easier, there is a twilight check-in at London Gatwick for passengers who prefer to simply turn up for their flight, knowing their luggage has already been taken care of on the previous evening.

Following check-in, I headed to a celebratory self-service breakfast. Between bites, I listened to speeches from both the CEO of Jet2.com, Steve Heapy and the CEO of London Gatwick, Pierre-Hugues Schmit. It was especially cool to see the woman behind the iconic Jet2 radio and TV voiceovers, Zoe Lister, finally putting a face to that familiar voice!

On what days does Jet2 fly to Tenerife?

In addition to the number of Tenerife holidays offered, you can pick up some pretty cheap flights to Tenerife.

Three weekly services from Gatwick will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, increasing to four times a week in 2027. I was travelling on Thursday on the first-ever flight to Tenerife from Gatwick and returning on Tuesday, perfect for a short 5-night break. The flight time from London Gatwick to Tenerife was 4 hours.

How did the boarding go?

Arriving at the gate for boarding, there were a few camera crews around catching the moment for posterity. There were no call-outs for specific seat numbers; everyone just queued up and passed through Jet2 security one by one, showing passports and boarding cards. I'm not sure whether this will be the normal procedure, in place of row numbers, but it worked fine on this inaugural flight.

As we proceeded to the plane, we were welcomed and given a 1st flight club bag containing a model plane, a luggage tag, a notebook, a pen, and a small teddy bear. A nice momento of a special day in Jet2's aviation history.

What was Jet2's Airbus A321neo like?

I flew to Tenerife aboard an Airbus A321neo, one of Jet2's new aircraft.

A Jet2.com Airbus A321neo aircraft with a silver fuselage and red tail parked on a sunny airport tarmac with boarding stairs attached.

While the seats felt slightly narrower than those on some competitor airlines, they were comfortable. Any concerns about width vanished when I reached Row 20; I secured a seat by the emergency exit, which completely transformed my onboard experience. Since both my husband and I are tall, the 35-inch pitch provided ample room for us to stretch our legs and enjoy the flight in total comfort.

This Airbus has more seats than other aircraft in its class, which probably accounts for the seats feeling narrower. It operates with lower fuel consumption and emissions, a nod to providing a service while acknowledging environmental and climate issues. Jet2 has an additional 155 Airbus A321neo aircraft on order, signalling its intent to be at the top of its game as the UK's 3rd largest airline.

What happened to the stow nets?

There were no stow nets in any of the seats. As we were in the emergency exit rows, we had to stow all our belongings in the overhead locker for takeoff and landing, which meant there was nowhere to put things like a water bottle, book, headphones, etc. - all the bits and bobs that I usually squirrel away in the stow pocket in front of me. Also, the tray table is in the armrest in the emergency exit seats, so if you've got your tray down with stuff on it, it's a bit of a faff trying to reach your bag on the floor.

For me, it's not a game-changer; once the seatbelt signs were off, we could put our bags under the seats in front of us, but I definitely missed the extra convenience of a stow net.

What was available onboard?

Once my flight had taken off, the Jet2 Cafe service was brought round with a selection of hot and cold snacks. There was also a Jet2 duty-free service. Payment is only by card.

I also had a read of the Jet2 Inflight magazine, which was full of great destinations to visit. There was also a magazine editorial by Jet2's CEO, whom I had seen in person earlier that morning at the breakfast function.

What was the flight like?

The flight to Tenerife from London Gatwick was super-smooth and comfortable. The icing on the cake was seeing the snow-covered peak of Mount Teide as we descended. Tenerife had experienced unseasonal weather the week before my trip, resulting in snow. Not great for holidaymakers, but absolutely fabulous for the view I had from my window seat. Does anyone else think it looks like Mount Fuji in Japan?

What was the transfer like?

Leaving the departure area at Tenerife Sur airport, we were welcomed by Jet2 ground staff and directed to our waiting coach transfer. After all holidaymakers were on board, a Jet2 representative came on board and gave us a pack containing all the relevant contact details we might need while in resort, along with an island map. The pack also contained a booklet full of experiences in Tenerife that you can book through your Jet2 representative.

After that, we started the 30-minute transfer to our hotel, dropping off at other hotels along the way. The transfer was seamless, and staying in Adeje meant we had landed, collected our luggage, been transferred and were in our room all within 90 minutes.

Once at the resort, I also received a WhatsApp message from my rep letting me know her name and what day and time she would be visiting.

Is the Jet2 App easy to use?

Absolutely! It is one of the easiest aviation interfaces I have used. Check-in online, download boarding cards, get real-time updates for your holiday, upload and view travel documents and access 24/7 in-resort support. I loved using the app to check my return transfer details in real time because I could watch exactly where my coach was on the journey to my hotel.

Final Thoughts

I have flown with Jet2holidays on two other occasions, previous to this one, to Lanzarote and Vienna, and have found their holidays to be top-notch. Now that I can board a Jet2 flight from London Gatwick without first having to drive to Stansted, I will be inspired to book more holidays with them because of the convenience this new hub offers. I have my eye on a Jet2 Christmas Market trip, so watch this space!

We stayed at the Melia Jardines del Teide for 5 nights as part of a Jet2holiday package. It was the perfect amount of time to relax at the resort, spend time on the beach, and hire a car to explore the island for a day.

Disclaimer: My holiday to Tenerife was a press invite from Jet2.com. However, the opinions in this review are based entirely on my own experiences of Melia Jardines del Teide.
